An interview done for the Black & Blue event in Montreal……
1-How was your experience at Black and Blue last year?
It was one of the highlights of 2008 for me. Nothing short of breathtaking. That many people in one room is some spectacle. I wouldn’t be human if I couldn’t admit it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
2-How did you react when BBCM reinvited you for the same event, two years in a row?
I was really surprised but very happy. It’s an honour to come back again for the second year in a row.
3-You previously worked with Steve Anderson while you were forming the Brothers in Rhythm duo. How was it like to produce music as a duo ? Do you prefer working on your own ? I always make music with other people. I’ve been really lucky to work with some technical wizzards over the years and my programming skills just don’t come up to their standard to be working completely solo. And besides which, I find it a much more enjoyable and fulfilling experience being creative with others. For me, it’s better to be able to bounce ideas backwards and forwards than to get stuck in your own little world.
4-You worked a lot with Kylie Minogue back then, you were there when she kind of emancipated. How was it like to be involded in the process of her emancipation ? Is it true that she went back into the studio to record new vocals for remix purposes ?
It was an privilege to be involved in her career. Writing and producing ‘Confide In Me’ remains one of my proudest achievements to date. She’s one of the world’s greatest artists and that particular time was a period of wonderful experimentation for her. I look back on those times with fond memories. And yes, we did get her back into the studio to do new vocals for all the club mixes.
5-Fans refer to this era of Kylie’s work as The Wilderness Years. Tell us more about that.
To be honest, I’ve never heard that term before but if you mean it was her least commercially successful period, I’m more than comfortable with that. As I said before, it was a time when she was exploring her boundaries and limitations as an artist which wasn’t necessarily well received by the press but we had a ball and I actually think, looking back, that the work stands the test of time well. The ‘Impossible Princess’ is underrated. But then , I would say that wouldn’t I?!!. Hahahaha…
6-How and when did you transition from producer to club DJ? There wasn’t much of a transition. I started DJing in clubs more or less about the same time as I started making music. It’s just that I was probably more well known for producing in my early years and now it’s vice versa.
7-Do you prefer old school producing or are you more at ease with newer technologies? They both have their own merits. I think a blend of the two is the best way. Newer technology has certainly made some things quicker but there is something special about old analogue synths, mixing desks and effects units. It felt great to be surrounded by equipment in the old days even if we didn’t really know how to use half of it!!
8-Do you feel you always have to prove yourself because of your past reputaton?
Not at all. The only person I have to answer to is myself and I’m always striving to be better and do a good job at whatever it is I do
9-Could you share with us a typical day in the life of Dave Seaman.
I don’t really have a typical day. My weeks are more typical though. Mondays are a family day. I have two young boys aged 3 and 4 so it’s important for me to spend as much time with them as possible. Tuesdays is catching up with emails, website & social networking, label stuff, banking and paying bills, everyday business. Wednesday is family again. Thursday is spent listening to this weeks new releases and preparing for the weekend ahead. Friday I’ll usually be traveling to and playing at a gig. Same is true of Saturday and then Sunday is traveling home before crashing out in front of the TV or cinema or a show. Of course, all this goes out of the window if I’m producing or doing a mix CD but this is the routine most weeks.
10-Musically, what do you have in store for Black and Blue?
I’m actually going to prepare a few special edits of certain things. After the experience of playing last year I think I have a good idea of what will go down well. Apart from that, I’m not willing to divulge any further information. It would spoil the surprise. You’ll have to wait and see
